🫓 Making Injera at Unity Park: A Cultural Experience You’ll Never Forget

Unity Park, located within the Grand Palace of Addis Ababa, isn’t just a beautiful place full of history and lush gardens—it’s also where Ethiopia’s rich traditions come alive. One of the most memorable experiences at the park is learning how to make Injera, the spongy, sour flatbread that is the heart of every Ethiopian meal.

Whether you're a first-time visitor or a curious local, joining an injera-making session in Unity Park lets you connect with Ethiopia in a deeply authentic way.

🌾 What is Injera?

Injera is more than food—it's culture. Made from teff, an ancient grain native to Ethiopia, injera is soft, slightly tangy, and perfect for scooping up delicious stews like doro wot or shiro. Traditionally, making injera is an art passed down through generations, with care and community at the center.

👩🏽‍🍳 The Experience at Unity Park

Inside the traditional Ethiopian house setup in Unity Park, you’ll find local women dressed in habesha kemis preparing injera over a clay griddle called a mitad. Guests are invited to:

  • Watch the preparation of the teff batter

  • Learn how to swirl the batter on the hot mitad

  • Try making their own injera under the guidance of local experts

  • Taste fresh injera right on the spot

This is not a staged show—it’s a chance to feel the rhythm of Ethiopian daily life and take part in a tradition that ties families and communities together.

🧡 Why It Matters

Participating in injera-making is more than just a fun activity. It’s about preserving culture, celebrating heritage, and bringing people together. It also shows how Ethiopia balances tradition with modernity right in the heart of the capital.

📸 Don’t Forget Your Camera

The scene is picture-perfect—smiling faces, steam rising from the mitad, the backdrop of Ethiopia’s presidential palace and gardens, and the unmistakable aroma of fresh injera.

✨ Plan Your Visit

Unity Park is open throughout the week. To join the injera-making session, you can either:

  • Ask your guide to include it in your itinerary

  • Or check the daily schedule at the traditional village section of the park

Perfect Layover Solution!

Booked the city tour with addis ababa tour during my 24-hour layover in Addis Ababa. The guide was exceptional—knowledgeable, friendly, and punctual. Highlights included the Lucy fossil at the National Museum, a traditional coffee ceremony, and panoramic views from Entoto Hills. The tour perfectly balanced culture, history, and local cuisine (lunch was delicious!). The vehicle was clean, and airport transfers were seamless. Great value for money. Highly recommend for travelers short on time!
